What path has your career taken since graduation?

After graduating, I first worked in the logistics department of my wife’s family business in China as a construction consultant for two years, gaining experience in project coordination and infrastructure planning. Later, I transitioned into the early education sector by helping my wife establish an early education and childcare institution in China. As a co-founder, I took full responsibility for HR, team building, and overall operations, developing strong leadership and management skills. This entrepreneurial experience shaped my ability to build and manage teams, solve problems under pressure, and navigate the challenges of running a business.

What is your current role?

I currently run an early education and childcare business, which faced significant challenges during the three years of the pandemic but managed to survive and adapt. Now, with the economic downturn causing many similar institutions to close, I have led my team in developing a differentiated approach to stand out. One key focus has been incorporating early English exposure into our programs. Having studied abroad myself, I understand the importance of language learning and how early exposure can make a huge difference. By introducing infants and toddlers to English in a natural way, we help lay the foundation for easier learning as they grow.

What experiences do you feel helped you get to your current position?

After graduating from the University of Edinburgh, I pursued a Master’s degree in International Real Estate at the University of Glasgow, choosing this field purely out of personal interest. I ultimately earned my degree with Merit.

I believe the success of my own business and its effective operations stem from the resilience and determination I developed during my university years. Even though my current work is not directly related to my academic background, the problem-solving skills and perseverance I honed during my studies have played a crucial role. University was a challenging experience that strengthened my mindset, and the lessons I learned continue to benefit me throughout my life.

How have you used the skills and/or knowledge developed during your degree in your career?

University isn’t just about academics—it’s about building your resilience. The challenges you face will shape you and give you the mental strength you’ll need in your career. Stick with it, because those experiences will pay off for years to come.

What advice would you give to students who are interested in your area of work?

From day one at university, start thinking about your career path. Get to know your field and the companies in it, and figure out what specific skills they’re looking for. That way, you can focus on building the right skills and be job-ready when you graduate. Also, don't underestimate the importance of emotional intelligence—especially when it comes to managing relationships, and for international students, understanding cultural differences is key.
