Further study can be a great way to specialise, learn new things and make yourself more employable… and fun! But it can also be expensive, time-consuming and sometimes unhelpful. The key point is: it should be part of a plan.
Reasons to study:
- To specialise in a specific area of engineering (e.g. automotive, aerospace, earthquakes, materials, project management, sensors etc.)
- To undertake research – in something you are passionate about
- To gain a qualification necessary for your career (e.g. teacher, academic, doctor)
- To become eligible to work towards Chartered Engineering (CEng) status
- To switch to a new job area (e.g. IT, dentistry, finance) – but do you research to find out if it is really necessary for your next career goal? Would the same time spent gaining work experience be more beneficial?
Reasons NOT to study:
- To procrastinate/delay career decisions
Be aware: if you are on a BEng programme and wish to study at masters level in order to be eligible to become a CEng, that masters must be accredited. Check out the status of individual programmes in the the UK on the Engineering Council website.
